How does Trenchless Sewer Pipe Lining Work?

A CIPP trenchless sewer pipe lining (Cured-In-Place-Pipe) is a method of sewer repair that can be used for a wide range of different types of problems with a sewer line. With a trenchless sewer lining, a pipe liner is coated with an epoxy resin and then inserted into a sewer line and inflated, coating the interior of the sewer line with the resin. CIPP linings are just as durable and resilient as other types of pipe linings and they are an excellent choice in a wide range of different circumstances because of their convenience compared to other methods of sewer repair. Installing a pipe lining doesn’t require a trench which is one of its main benefits but there are many others.

A CIPP lining creates a “pipe within a pipe”

A CIPP lining is basically a “pipe within a pipe”, as it is installed using a pipe liner coated in an epoxy resin that hardens, creating a new seamless pipe within the existing sewer line. Prior to installing the lining, the interior of the sewer line is cleaned out as much as possible, normally with hydrojetting. If there are any parts of the sewer line that are significantly damaged, local repairs may be required prior to installing the CIPP. The pipe liner is then saturated with resin and inserted into the sewer line. The type of resin that is used can include silicate, vinyl ester, or polyester and the pipe liner can be saturated using applied pressure, gravity or vacuum.

Trenchless liners can be installed using the inversion method

The inversion method is often used in order to install a CIPP liner, and this method involves using a pressure vessel or a scaffold tower to apply water or air pressure which then turns the liner inside out and pushes it along the sewer line. Liners can also be winched into place through an access hole and inflated to contact the host pipe. The resin often will cure at ambient temperatures, but in many cases UV light or heat can be used in order to speed up the curing. One the resin has cured, the liner is removed from the sewer pipe. A sample of the CIPP may be removed in order to test it for performance and ensure that it will work properly, depending on the necessary application.
